At the cadence of McCarthyism, Arthur Miller had a close friend who had been accused and was ordain to take inTHE CRUCIBLEIn 1692, puritan Massachusetts was a catchy place to live. ThePuritans were people who had left England to live a pure and sanctum lifein America. They obeyed the laws of the bible and were a verysuperstitious mathematical group of people. They believed that any behaviour thatopposed the bible, even the tiniest thing, was of the devil and hiswitches.In 1950s America there was a Senator called Joseph McCarthy who ledthe Un-American Activities committee. This meant that he wasin charge of ridding the continent of anything that was deemedUn-American. It had not been long since the Second World warfare and allAmericans were very paranoid about the rise of communism in some ofthe eastern European countries. Joseph McCarthy was not at all interested in putting people in jail but fitting names- he wanted toknow the names of those who were involved in communism. Thi s processwas soon to be known as McCarthyism.At the time of McCarthyism, Arthur Miller had a close friend who hadbeen accused and was willing to name names- Miller was angry andbegan to write the crucible. The crucible is known as what is calledan Allegory. This means that it is written to subliminally luffsomething about matchless thing when it is cosmos described as another. Thecrucible describes the Salem which trials in 1692 but is meant to showthe complete similarities between it and 1950s McCarthyism.Two of the main characters in The melting pot are hindquarters and ElizabethProctor. We learn at the beginning of the play that John andElizabeth have a very onerous marriage. There is growth in themistrust between them as we grow to learn that John has had an amourwith the reverends niece Abigail. After numerous events John andElizabeth are move to prison on the charges of witchcraft. Near theend of the play they meet for one last time to discuss their course ofaction.Fac ed with a sticky decision, John must choose between life andtruth. This decision is difficult because he wishes to live and seehis children grow up but he dare not lie about committing a crime heis not guilty of. He will do only what his wife wishes. But what isher wish? When her and John first meet in the prison she says to himThe children are well. Rebecca Samuels keeps them she says this withthe intent that John will feel a expiration on the behalf of his children.
